Program Description:

The Marian Koshland Science Museum in Washington D.C. has found ways to make their exhibits engaging and fun. The exhibits are designed for adults and teenagers who can spend time learning and having fun with subjects such as Global Warming, Infectious Diseases and other interesting interactives. The exhibit of Infectious Disease provides visitors with the opportunity to step into a mural of people walking around making available to visitors the types of bacteria and diseases that can be passed from one person to another. They offer digital learning zones within the museum as well as their website. By offering unique and creative ways to present information these exhibits allow for visitors to be their own guide and discover at their own pace. These exhibits are a collaborative effort by experts in their field and are based on reports, collection of books that have attracted older crowds as well as young teens. These exhibits are available to travel around the country as well as online.

Firsthand or secondary review/critique:

These exhibits would be something I would want to visit while in Washington D.C. The exhibit is like no other I have experienced where visitors can simulate the spread of a simple imaginary disease in order to explore how they spread and what can be done to prevent them. A visitor steps into the mural where they explore and learn about important issues that affect our everyday life.

I explored the online interactive mural which is an excellent learning tool streamed through WEBQUEST to classrooms. The interactives focus on the use of visualization, multimedia using streamed video. The exhibit is built around National Science reports working with multimedia technicians, researchers and experienced museum personnel creating one of a kind learning experience. The wall mural exhibit will appeal to a wide range of teen and adult visitors and not being a science person myself I found the wall mural and the other interactive exhibits user friendly.

This looks really interesting! I learned about their "Lights at Night" online experience last semester. It seems like the Koshland does some good media work!

This is a really neat exhibit. I like that it's travelling and available online. It's interesting that they said their 'ideal' viewer is an adult with a teenager - teenagers are not afraid of technology. In many ways they can help their elders! Nice...
