Program Description: (150-250 words)

The National Museum in Krakow, Poland, wanted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of artist Stanisław Wyspiański’s death by showing “great achievements of the famous Polish artist by using the newest audiovisual technologies” (http://www.cayintech.com/digital_signage_applications/case_krakow_national_museum.html).  Using projectors, LCD displays, SMP players, and mirrors, the museum (via Cayin Technology) was able to present Wyspiański’s works in a very creative way.  For example, images of Wawel Cathedral, for which Wyspiański designed stained glass windows, were displayed on 5-meter screens through the use of Sanyo projectors and optical mirrors.  The way they work is similar to how the human eye functions with the mirrors reflecting the images onto the screens. Such a display allows for high-quality moving images shown in a large, dramatic size.  Additionally, the use of polarized sound meant that visitors only heard sound when they stood directly beneath specific speakers.  According to Grzegorz Bien, Consultant of Music Info, it created a very “specific climate” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWO7HzH_xSE).  The museum was so impressed with the technology, plans were put into action to utilize Digital Signage in other parts of the museum, particularly for communication.

Firsthand or secondary review/critique: (150-250 words)

This was the first time digital signage technology was used in Poland for a cultural project.  I find it interesting that the museum first used the projectors and displays in an exhibition (or to be more specific, a “Monumental Theatre”) rather than for wayfinding or communicating daily information.  It seems a little backwards, but it works out.  The users are now familiar with how the technology functions, and probably are better prepared to fix daily hiccups after using the digital signage on a grander scale.  Such problem-solving, however, was not discussed on any of the sources I found.  Cayin Technology said that the “authors of the exhibition could synchronize content, manage the system remotely, and operate the exhibition 24 hours a day without problems” (http://www.cayintech.com/digital_signage_applications/case_krakow_national_museum.html).  But they don’t expand on how their technology facilitates this.  In any case, fully-functioning digital signage creates a unique and dramatic form of exhibit display, fitting for a visual artist like Wyspiański.  It would be fantastic to see other works, such as those of Dalí, in the same manner.

Technologies incorporated: CAYIN SMP-WEBPLUS and SMP-PRO3 players, Sanyo 42" LCD displays, projectors, and optical mirrors
