Program Description:

In 2008 the California Academy of Sciences completed their new sustainable home embodying the Academy’s mission “to explore, explain and protect the natural world.” It is the only institution in the world to house an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum, and world-class research and education programs under one roof. The media and technology used at the Academy are digital DVI inputs for video projection, optical fiber IP networks for computer, audio and video data, resulting in a future looking infrastructure with less need for cabling. The Academy collaborated with Visual Acuity to incorporate heat-efficient projectors and low energy lights using ColorKinetics LED lighting from Phillips. Visual Acuity found projection systems that would meet specialty requirements for each area within the Academy which included blending, warping and color matching combined with a good power in light out ratio. The Visualization Studio produces and distributes real-time updates of scientific information and ‘breaking news’ to all of the digital areas at the Academy via flat-panel displays and interactive touch screens including Morrison Planetarium, 3D Theater, Hohfeld Hall and Water Planet.

Firsthand or secondary review/critique: WOW! This is an amazing facility that combines digital and static technology to bring visitors an immersive experience. I spent hours looking over the website and using different apps that are easy to use. The interactive location map can be found in the museum as well as onsight use, providing visitors with detailed description of where they are located and how to access them. The Academy's new facility in Golden Gate Park houses an aquarium, a planetarium, a natural history museum and a 4-story rain forest all under one living roof. The new facility is also home to the Academy's staff of world-class scientists, an education department that provides a wide range of student and teacher services, and an extensive science library with over 20 million specimens and artifacts.

All areas have exhibits displayed along with informational boards and special exhibits. The displays are digitally transferred onto large LCD screens and information is provided onto the screens as to schedules and ticket prices. After examining the website digital signage has been used throughout the museum.

There are many YouTube videos online and the website. I was unable to download one of the videos, how do you delete them when the embeding isn't accepted.

I am not sure what I did that it didn't save so my project is late. I had to redo the project to post...in the future I will double check my downloads.

Sometimes when I can't embed, I just give the link. Not as visually pleasing or easy, but its an option.
This has such a nice clean look to it.
