Program Description: (150-250 words)

DMA Friends is a free membership program that users can access via Ipad kiosks in the Dallas Museum of Art. Users can enter “activity codes” into the DMA Friends program to unlock special content connected to the Museum’s exhibitions. They can also earn “badges” through DMA Friends. Badges with names such as “Social Butterfly” or “Insomniac” are awarded to users that interact frequently with the Museum and participate in a specific bundle of activities. DMA Friends also allows users to collect points. Earning points garners users special rewards like discounts, free tickets to special exhibitions, and access to exclusive experiences at the Museum. In addition to the Ipad kioks at the Dallas Museum of Art, users can also interact with DMA friends on their personal mobile devices and online. The DMA Friends program both rewards long-term engagement of visitors with the museum, and allows the DMA to record information about their users.

Firsthand or secondary review/critique: (150-250 words)

DMA Friends was awarded the "Best of the Web" award at the 2014 Museums and the Web conference. In his Art and Seek article about DMA Friends, Jerome Weeks, discusses the unveiling of the Friends program. He notes that the program initially has a few bugs that need to be worked out, but overall it is easy to use. He likens the experience of signing up for a DMA Friends membership to printing a boarding pass for a plane. He means this in the sense that it is an intuitive process that the general population should find easily accessible. After you have been signed into the DMA Friends system, you will receive a membership card to use during future visits. Weeks believes that a major strength of the DMA Friends program is that it makes benefits that were previously only available to paying members accessible to everyone. Overall Week’s opinion of the program appears to be that it is a mutually beneficial for the Museum and users. The Museum is able to collect unprecedented amount of information about its visitors. Meanwhile, the visitor is able to establish a strong relationship to the Museum. The user feels valued and understood through a program that tracks their preferences, and rewards them for their loyalty in the form of badges and points.
